WTC SITE MEMORIAL
DESIGN STATEMENT
My design concept for the World Trade Center Memorial Site is responded with the existing site surrounded with high-rise buildings of strong visual appearance. I therefore want my memorial to be monumental, symbolic and overpowering the surrounding buildings in order to create a visual focus. Size does matter. Therefore I design a 400 feet tall monumental memorial structure, taller than the new museum tower called crystal memorial.
CRYSTAL MEMORIAL
The two tilted steel columns represent the World Trade Center twin towers beholding together with two sloping beams, which symbolise the two aeroplanes, crashed and formed a unified language of strength, unity and harmony. I want to create a Crystal Memorial with floating glass panels and stone at the base. The glasses are varied in size, form, colour and texture and reflectivity. The glasses are formed to make sensual curve, which represent vines growth in nature and space. This symbolic memorial is constantly changing its appearance during different day, time and season and infinity. At night, the memorial will be lit up like a crystal diamond, which represents everlasting freedom, reaffirm for global life, strength and unity, an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance.
The reflective pool with the central glass fountain provides street level visual focus. The circular pool will accommodate ceremonial place at the base of the monument.
The approach to the memorial site will enhance different experience as viewed from different angles and directions. It will occur simultaneously in different views and evolve and change with each visitor. It is the place to share memory, communication, connection, and understanding and enhance the memory of cultures.
FOOTPRINT MEMORIAL
The front facade of the Tower footprints is defined by series of 92 columns, which represent 92 countries involved in tragic event. The columns are 40 feet tall with the original ground level entry lobby of the towers. Each black column is represented with the country origin inscribed with vertical stripes of the national flag colours. The columns symbolise global community, a memorial to fight against terror, to commemorate individual victims, to cross boundaries, to remember cultures and to teach future generations.
The materials used for the floor finishes will be the surviving original elements, leftover marble from the ground-flor lobbies of the towers, red granite slabs from the outdoor plaza, door frames, granite slabs and porous stone countertops found in the basement of the collapsed World Trade Center and could be used.
1 RECOGNISED EACH INDIVIDUAL WHO WAS A VICTIM OF THE ATTACKS
A total of 3016 victims of the September 11, 2001 in New York and Pennsylvania, and
A total of 6 people died and over 1000 injured, victims of the February 26, 1993 terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center will be honoured inside the footprints of the twin towers. The identified victims will be honoured with a solid glass memorials surrounded with 9 columns and 11 rows of floating ponds in each tower footprint.. The 911number represents the victims of the September 11.
Each identified victims will be remembered and honoured, which represented with a solid glass memorial of 1x1.5x5 feet high. Inside the glass memorial consists of three stones recycled from the collapsed towers. It represents a “floating rocks” with freedom of spirits. The clear glass wall can be touched and feel and write personal messages from the loved ones and it evolved over time. A victim’s name and personal history will be inscribed on the blade bronze plate located on the floor beside the glass memorial.
The glass memorials are arranged in two rows beside a long reflective pond with black granite face and a solid clear glass bench seat. So that the water level will be similar with the glass bench seat. Representing a floating seat.
During the day, the glass memorials with millions of floating rocks will create a place of reflective rainbow lights within the trees, a place for reflection and a sanctuary to eternity.
At nights, the glass memorials will be up-lighted with fibre optic lights. The floating rocks become millions of floating stars. The lighting effect is programmed to create a sea of rainbow light in every 10 minutes.
2 AREAS FOR QUIET VISITATION AND CONTEMPLATION
The areas are located in the chambers of memory in the North and South tower footprints. The visitors enter the chambers from the ceremonial space through 3 main entries of each chamber. The chambers are divided into 4 areas of granite walls. The victims’ names will be inscribed in black granite wall, listed alphabetically and by country origin, do not include rank or honour. Many visitors can insert flowers in the niches of the Roll of Honour, next to a name that has personal or group connections.
The focus of the Memorial is the Chamber of Memory, a quiet place for contemplation of the efforts of ordinary victims and for the remembrance of those who suffered and died. The Chamber is a complex symbolic area, consisting of a number of columns of Tower footprints. Each column represents a country origin with a long and narrow reflective pool above.
3 AREAS FOR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES OF VICTIMS
The Chamber of Memory is also catered for the families and loved ones of victims.
Eternity Memorial Garden provides outdoor garden for remembrance and honoured the victims. The memorial site is made sacred through tragic loss. The long reflective pond consisted of glass bench seatings, which provide areas for the families and the loved ones to whisper and communicate with the victims.
Visitors can decorate the glass memorial with flowers.
4 FINAL RESTING-PLACES FOR THE UNIDENTIFIED VICTIMS
The area 2500 sq feet will be allocated in the northern side of the South Tower Chamber of memory. It is an under-covered enclosed space. There is a granite tomb of 10x2x7feet high laid in the chamber.
From the entrance area, visitors can look up to the black granite columns of the Chamber of Memory - inside which lies the Tomb of the Unknown Victim. This is the commemorative heart of the Memorial. Above the Chamber of Memory is the transparent roof with the Pool of Reflection. The west wall is crowned by the Eternal Flame.
5 VISIBLE FOOTPRINTS OF THE ORIGINAL WORLD TRADE CENTER
The front facade of the Tower footprints is defined by series of 92 columns, which represent 92 countries involved in tragic event. The columns are 40 feet tall, which represent the original height of the podium façade, with the original ground level entry lobby of the towers. The columns symbolise global community, a memorial to fight against terror, to commemorate individual victims, to cross boundaries, to remember cultures and to teach future generations.
The sidewalls represent the actual border footprints of the towers. The walls are built up to the original level of the ground floor level. The materials installed will be the original surviving broken stones or concrete blocks layered with irregular length of stainless steel strips.
The materials used for the floor finishes will be the surviving original elements, leftover marble from the ground-flor lobbies of the towers, red granite slabs from the outdoor plaza,
Granite slabs and porous stone countertops.
6 SCULPTURE GARDEN
This area is located between the North and South Towers, beside the museum. The abstract bronze sculptures will represent the rescued fireman, policeman and ordinary people who survived, the courage of those who risked their lives to save others, and the compassion of all who support us in the darkest hours.

The glazed wall will be patterned with the images of work place and history of the world Trade Center.
