RAYMOND CHAI

The web site provides the most complete visual documentation to date of his paintings and drawings arising from an extraordinary series of exhibitions over the past ten years.

CHAI is a controversial, passionate, colourful figure who appreciates human lifestyles and queer identities, depicting these complexities in his paintings and drawings.  With his significant architectural background, his paintings relate with art and architecture, articulated with space, light and volume, and seek to accommodate historical, cultural, social and sexual expression within modernism.

His passions emerged when he came out of the closet, concentrating on drawing the queer form, which he believed needed a very strong expression in an open, modern, queer society.  He began to discover a gay identity within and quickly immersed himself in creating contemporary queer art, breaking away from his traditional landscape paintings of the late eighties.

CHAI's works have been influenced by artist Brett Whiteley, John Perceval, Kitaj, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Paul Cadmus, Tom of Finland, Keith Harding, Andy Warhol and Pierre et Gilles. CHAI'S paintings are found in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, England, Europe, and USA.

Featured exhibitions below, are a few selected examples of the oil paintings with images of realist, figurative and abstract art.  More paintings will be included in the web site.

Enjoy.
